What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa located at the outer point of the hip, known as the greater trochanter. This condition causes pain in the hip, especially when lying on the affected side, walking, or climbing stairs.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the outer side of the hip, especially when lying on the affected side

  • Swelling and tenderness over the greater trochanter

  • Pain that worsens with prolonged walking, climbing stairs, or running

  • A burning or aching sensation in the hip

Risk Factors

  • Repetitive hip movements: Common in runners and athletes

  • Hip injuries: Such as falls or direct trauma to the hip

  • Leg length discrepancies: Can contribute to abnormal stress on the hip

  • Previous hip surgeries: Increases the risk of bursitis

  • Age and Gender: More common in older adults and women

  • Rest and Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen and stretch the hip muscles

  • Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Targeting the inflamed bursa to reduce pain and swelling
