What is Basal Thumb Arthritis?

Basal thumb arthritis, also known as carpometacarpal (CMC) joint arthritis, occurs at the base of the thumb where it meets the wrist. This condition is common and can cause significant pain and disability.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the base of the thumb, especially during gripping or pinching

  • Swelling and tenderness around the CMC joint

  • Reduced strength in the thumb, making it difficult to perform tasks

  • A grinding or clicking sensation in the joint

Risk Factors

  • Age: More common in individuals over 40

  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop basal thumb arthritis

  • Previous thumb injuries: Increases the risk of developing arthritis in the CMC joint

  • Repetitive hand use: Such as in occupations requiring strong pinching or gripping motions

Treatment

  • Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms

  • Splinting: To immobilize the thumb and reduce strain on the joint

  • Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Targeting the CMC joint to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain

  • PRP Therapy: Utilizing the body’s natural growth factors to promote joint healing and reduce symptoms

  • Surgical Intervention: In advanced cases, surgery may be required to reconstruct the joint
