Radial Tunnel Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatments
What is Radial Tunnel Syndrome?
Radial tunnel syndrome occurs when the radial nerve is compressed as it passes through the radial tunnel near the elbow. This condition can cause pain and weakness in the forearm and hand, often mimicking symptoms of tennis elbow.
01
Symptoms
-
Pain along the top of the forearm, extending to the hand
-
Weakness in the hand and wrist
-
Difficulty in extending the wrist and fingers
-
Pain that worsens with repetitive forearm activities
02
Risk Factors
-
Repetitive forearm motions: Such as twisting or gripping
-
Prolonged pressure on the forearm: Leaning on the forearm for extended periods
-
Previous injuries: Such as fractures or dislocations of the forearm or elbow
-
Overuse in sports: Such as tennis, golf, or throwing activities
03
Treatment
-
Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms
-
Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the forearm muscles and reduce nerve compression
-
Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Reducing inflammation around the radial nerve
-
PRP Injections: Promoting healing and nerve regeneration using the body’s own growth factors
-
Surgical Decompression: In severe cases, surgery may be required to relieve pressure on the radial nerve
