Olecranon Bursitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

What is Olecranon Bursitis?​

Olecranon bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa located at the tip of the elbow (olecranon). The bursa is a small sac filled with fluid that helps reduce friction between bones and soft tissues.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and redness at the back of the elbow

  • Pain when bending the elbow or pressing on the swollen area

  • Stiffness in the elbow joint

  • In severe cases, fever and warmth around the elbow (if infected)

Risk Factors

  • Direct trauma: Injury or a blow to the elbow

  • Prolonged pressure: Leaning on the elbow for extended periods

  • Repetitive movements: Such as pushing or lifting

  • Medical conditions: Gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or previous elbow injuries

Treatment

  • Rest and Avoiding Pressure: To allow the bursa to heal

  • Anti-inflammatory Medications: To reduce pain and swelling

  • Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Reducing inflammation in the bursa

  • Aspiration and PRP Therapy: Draining excess fluid and injecting PRP to promote healing
