Hip Osteoarthritis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What is Hip Osteoarthritis?

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage cushioning the ends of the bones in the hip joint wears down over time. This condition leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, commonly affecting older adults.

Symptoms

  • Gradual onset of hip pain, often worsening with activity

  • Stiffness in the hip joint, particularly after periods of inactivity

  • Reduced range of motion in the hip, making it difficult to walk or bend

  • Pain that radiates to the groin, thigh, or buttocks

  • A grinding or clicking sensation in the hip joint during movement

02

Risk Factors

  • Age: More common in older adults

  • Obesity: Extra weight puts additional stress on the hip joints

  • Previous hip injuries: Increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis

  • Genetic predisposition: Family history of osteoarthritis

  • Repetitive stress: Occupational or sports-related activities involving hip movement

03

Treatment

  • Weight Management and Exercise: To reduce stress on the hip joints and improve mobility

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip and improve joint stability

  • Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Reducing inflammation and providing pain relief in the hip joint

  • Hyaluronic Acid Injections: Lubricating the hip joint to reduce pain and improve mobility

  • PRP Injections: Promoting cartilage repair and reducing inflammation using the body’s natural growth factors

  • Surgical Options: In advanced cases, hip replacement surgery may be necessary
