Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?
Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by increased pressure on the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner side of the elbow. This nerve compression can result in pain, numbness, and tingling in the arm and hand.
01
Symptoms
-
Numbness and tingling in the ring and little fingers
-
Pain in the elbow, especially on the inner side
-
Weakness in the hand, leading to difficulty gripping objects
-
Worsening symptoms when the elbow is bent for prolonged periods
02
Risk Factors
-
Prolonged elbow flexion: Such as holding a phone or sleeping with a bent elbow
-
Direct pressure: Leaning on the elbow
-
Previous elbow injuries: Such as fractures or dislocations
-
Repetitive motion: Activities that involve frequent bending and straightening of the elbow
03
Treatment
-
Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that cause prolonged elbow flexion
-
Splinting: To keep the elbow straight, especially at night
-
Physical Therapy: Exercises to reduce nerve compression
-
Ultrasound-Guided Injections: Steroids to reduce inflammation and PRP to promote nerve healing
-
Surgical Release: In severe cases, surgery may be required to relieve nerve pressure
