Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This condition leads to numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and fingers, particularly in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
01
Symptoms
-
Numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
-
Pain in the wrist and hand, especially at night
-
Weakness in the hand, leading to difficulty gripping objects
-
A "pins and needles" sensation that worsens with wrist movements
02
Risk Factors
-
Repetitive hand movements: Common in occupations involving typing, assembly line work, or hand tools
-
Wrist anatomy: A smaller carpal tunnel can predispose individuals to CTS
-
Medical conditions: Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypothyroidism
-
Pregnancy: Fluid retention during pregnancy can increase pressure on the median nerve
03
Treatment
-
Wrist Splinting: To keep the wrist in a neutral position, especially at night
-
Activity Modification: Reducing repetitive hand and wrist movements
-
Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Targeting the carpal tunnel to reduce inflammation and relieve pressure on the median nerve
-
PRP Injections: Promoting nerve healing and reducing symptoms by using the body’s natural growth factors
-
Surgical Release: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the median nerve
