What is Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint Osteoarthritis?

AC joint osteoarthritis involves the degeneration of cartilage in the acromioclavicular joint, where the clavicle meets the acromion. This condition is commonly seen in older adults or those with a history of shoulder trauma.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the top of the shoulder, especially when lifting the arm or reaching across the body

  • Swelling and tenderness over the AC joint

  • A visible bump over the joint

Risk Factors

  • Age: More common in older adults

  • Previous injuries: To the AC joint, such as fractures or dislocations

  • Repetitive overhead activities: Such as lifting or throwing

  • Heavy lifting: Contributes to joint degeneration

Treatment

  • Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that cause pain

  • Physical Therapy: Strengthening surrounding muscles to support the joint

  • Ultrasound-Guided Injections: Relieving pain and reducing inflammation in the joint

  • Surgical Intervention: In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove damaged tissue or bone
